MCP tools reference

Every tool and prompt: what it is for, its parameters, an example call and a reply, and what it costs.

The server has 8 tools. Six are free; ask and ask_result need a key with the scope free+ask, and only ask spends AI budget. A tool call is a tools/call request with the tool's name and an arguments object.

What a reply looks like

The text of a reply is Markdown for the agent to read: the first line names the knowledge-base version, then the answer with [C1] markers, then an Evidence footer that maps each marker to the claim id, the repository at the pinned commit, the file and lines, and the status (verified or what else it is). A small structuredContent object comes with it (ids, counts and tokens_used). Every tool takes two optional arguments: tokens (the most the reply may use, 300 to 12,000, default 3,000) and format (concise or detailed). What does not fit is dropped whole, and a line says how to narrow the question.

A tool's own failure is not an HTTP error: it comes back with isError: true and a sentence that says how to fix it, with an example. See Errors.

search_knowledge

Search verified claims about how agent harnesses (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, ...) are built: loops, compaction, budgets, tools, memory, sandboxing. Returns ranked hits with a status and an evidence id each; follow with get_topic or get_evidence. Free.

ask

Ask the research assistant a question about agent harnesses. It searches the knowledge base, checks its answer against the evidence and may suggest next steps. Costs money (your key's team budget). depth=quick answers here within about 45 s; depth=deep returns a job_id for ask_result. Needs a free+ask key.

Scope
free+ask
Cost
Spends AI budget: the measured cost of the run, against your key's daily cap and your account's own caps.
Read-only
No: it starts a run of the research assistant.

Prompts

Prompts are starting messages that you pick, not tools the model calls. Clients that list MCP prompts show them as slash commands; each one returns a message that tells the model which of the free tools to call, in what order, and how to cite the evidence. Text you type into an argument is placed in the message as data, fenced, never as an instruction.

NameTitleWhat it doesArguments
build_planWhat to build for my agentA build plan for your kind of agent, from the must-have and recommended topics, with evidence.agent_type; goal (optional)
compare_on_topicCompare harnesses on a topicCompare two to six harnesses on one topic: where they agree, where they differ, with evidence.topic; harnesses
review_designReview my harness design against the researchCheck a description of your agent's harness against the research: what is covered, partly covered or missing.agent_type; design; topic (optional)

In Claude Code they are /mcp__harnesslab__build_plan, /mcp__harnesslab__compare_on_topic and /mcp__harnesslab__review_design, with the arguments after the name. They need no scope beyond free, cost nothing themselves, and do not count as tool calls.
